Had a couple of Imps in the mid 70s loved them one had a Hartwell 998cc engine that use to rip the center out the clutch, but great cars to drive, wish I had the money to get one now

What a heap of woe make it more reliable l have seen these engine swapped great thats how you make them reliable they are one if tge worst british cars ever made sent Rootes Group broke and such a woeful terrible awful car not at all reliable thank goodness Toyota came along and showed you can make cars reliable and one of the reasons why the british car industry colapsed they built awful unreliable cars and in Australia they are not worth much they don't sell at all and people are asking rediculous prices for them

My Imps are as reliable as a Toyota, than again I do the work on it myself, I love them and drive them still every day and what a smiles I get, unbeliveable 😀😀

Looks like some of the comments are a bit below the belt.... Sadly, they have no idea about the car True it could have had better quality control...and some other bits...but that was the problem with large companies... Controlled by twits... That car today would have a good purpose... Certainly the engine could be improved or cleaned up.. regarding emissions.. But they were great little cars and fun too..in their day... I liked them...have had six..all great...easy to work on too..

Let me tell you the truth about the Imp and why it was not a commercial success! The Rootes Group wanted to build it on a new site on the outskirts of Coventry but they were refused planning by the governments of the day, who insisted it was built in Linwood due to the devastated Clyde shipyards and subsequent unemployment there! They promised a massive amount of government grants to the company but halfway through the project, they reneged, leaving the company very short of funds to complete the project properly! This had two knock-on effects 1) to rush the development into production before it was fully ready, & 2) to find a willing partner to help with their funding problems! At that time the only willing partner was Chrysler (USA) who were wanting to expand into Europe and had an agreement with the PSA group in France! However, they were not interested in this highly advanced little rear-engined car and would not support its proper development, instead favouring the French cars of similar size. The engineering departments were very restricted in what they could do, and held on a very tight budget all through the life of the IMP, with only cosmetic changes allowed. Even when simple and low-cost changes to the engineering of it would have proved cheaper to manufacture and give better handling & ride comfort! I know all this as I was working there at the time and subject to these restrictions!!

I had the misfortune to buy one of these cars in 1976. The quality was awful. Rust, seized kingpins, cooling problems, slipping timing due to a sheared lockpin. Perished doughnuts on the drive shafts. A brilliant design , years ahead of its time, spoilt by shocking build quality. I lost count of the number of times it let me down. Sad. By contrast, the 2 minis I owned, and 850 saloon and an 850 van gave me years of trouble free running.

This video is hilarious. Great job. I will be picking up one of these later today for $40. Such a unique piece of mowing history.
